Pregnancy & life support

In Ireland, a three judge bench of the High Court (President of the High Court, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, Ms Justice Marie Baker and Ms Justice Caroline Costello) will hand down its decision on Friday 26 December 2014 as to whether a young pregnant woman’s life support may be turned off in accordance with her family’s wishes.

The woman was declared brain dead on December 3rd when she was about 15 weeks pregnant.

The media reports suggest that life support is being maintained by the hospital pursuant to its understanding of legal obligations under the Irish Constitution, to preserve the life of her foetus.
