The Supreme Court of Canada has handed down its decision in Carter & Ors v Attorney General of Canada [2015] SCC 5.

The decision has been reported as recognising a right to physician assisted suicide. However the effect of the decision has been stayed for 12 months to allow the parliament to enact regulatory legislation.

The action was a significant one, being a single decision of the full bench of the court in litigation involving about 10 interveners.
