Retired midwife guilty verdict: FGM first prosecution in Australia

The Guardian today reports that a retired midwife, along with a mother of two young girls, was found guilty (jury verdict) of carrying out an FGM procedure on the two girls when they were aged 7 years. A similar report appears in ABC news.

Section 45 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) creates that offence, with a maximum penalty of 21 years imprisonment.

Section 45A of the Act provides for an offence with the same penalty if a person takes another person from the State, or arranges for another person to be taken from the State, with the intention of having female genital mutilation performed.
