Cosmetic procedures – national changes?

The Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council has published a working group report, entitled ‘Cosmetic Medical and Surgical Procedures – A National Framework‘.

The report makes a number of recommendations including:

  • a prohibition on offering such procedures as prizes, commission payments and financing schemes
  • protocols for adequate post operative care
  • a ‘cooling off period’ of 3 months for persons under 18 seeking cosmetic surgery
  • extension of regulations to unregistered practitioners

The recommendations do not apply to gender reassignment, reconstructive surgery, tattoing, body piercing and cosmetic dentistry.

The Medical Board of Australia has subsequently released draft supplementary guidelines on cosmetic medical and surgical procedures, for inclusion in the Good Medical Practice code of conduct.
